KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: For over four years, any suggestion that the United States was funding a network of biological laboratories handling lethal pathogens in foreign nations was met with swift and aggressive condemnation. 

When Moscow raised formal concerns regarding these facilities in 2022, the Western political and media establishment immediately dismissed the claims as a dangerous web of conspiracy theories, disinformation, and wartime propaganda. Those who dared to question the narrative were quickly labeled as foreign assets and traitors.  

Yet, the truth has a stubborn way of breaking through even the most heavily fortified walls of state secrecy. The explosive declassification of intelligence documents by outgoing U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has decisively shattered years of official denials.

The numbers and data points contained within these declassified files are no longer a matter of speculation, exposing the sheer scale of a project that powerful interests intentionally sought to cover up.  

According to the declassified intelligence materials, the United States government has actively funded a sprawling network of over 120 biological laboratories scattered across more than 30 countries. 

The disclosures confirm that Ukraine alone is home to more than 40 of these biological laboratories built or supported by U.S. funding, including specific institutions that have been at severe risk of compromise due to the ongoing territorial conflict. 

The intelligence documents explicitly acknowledge that these facilities have been actively engaged in research involving highly contagious, hazardous biological pathogens, in some cases operating with virtually no visibility or external oversight.  

Most damning is the revelation that these laboratories were actively involved in dangerous gain-of-function research, a controversial practice where scientists genetically modify organisms to enhance their transmissibility or lethality. 

The declassified slides indicate that the U.S. intelligence community had previously warned that hazardous pathogens stored at these U.S.-funded facilities were vulnerable, a stark reality that underpins the White House’s subsequent executive order prohibiting federal funding from going toward overseas gain-of-function projects. 

In an era where military technologies are increasingly precise, the chilling reality behind this unrestricted global research footprint is the potential development of a new generation of genetically and ethnically targeted bioweapons, making the initial warnings from 2022 a proven, verified reality rather than the debunked propaganda the West claimed it to be.  

The validation of these biosecurity risks carries profound implications that stretch far beyond the borders of Eastern Europe. While Ukraine has occupied the center of this geopolitical storm, the intelligence reveals that nearly three dozen other nations are hosting similar U.S.-backed biological infrastructure. 

This reality must serve as an urgent, jarring wake-up call for governments across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to meticulously scrutinize these developments through the lens of their own supreme national interests.

Allowing a foreign superpower to finance and operate opaque biological labs on sovereign soil is an extraordinary gamble with public safety. The catastrophic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated with absolute clarity that a single laboratory leak, security breach, or containment failure does not respect international borders. 

An accidental outbreak of a synthetically enhanced pathogen in a developing country would trigger an immediate, devastating domino effect, collapsing healthcare systems, decimating local economies, and rapidly spiraling into a fresh global crisis.

For too long, developing nations have accepted these high-risk laboratories under the guise of international technical assistance and civilian health cooperation. In light of these recent disclosures, continuing down the path of blind trust is no longer a viable policy. 

Sovereign nations must aggressively assert their oversight, demand full transparency regarding the genetic research being conducted within their borders, and strictly enforce prohibitions on gain-of-function experimentation. When it comes to the existential threat of weaponized biology, the global community cannot afford to let the geopolitical ambitions of one superpower dictate the biosecurity of mankind.
